Spiritual Awareness: The Hero's Journey!

“If you do follow your bliss you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and the life that you ought to be living is the one you are living. Follow your bliss and don’t be afraid, and doors will open where you didn't know they were going to be.”
-Joseph Campbell

At the Oprah Winfrey Life You Want event this past weekend, I heard of a concept used in almost every story ever told called The Hero’s Journey. Author Elizabeth Gilbert of the famous book Eat, Pray, Love; brought it to our attention by asking us if we are the heroes of our lives.

It’s amazing to me that when you are seeking to understand more about who you are the collective consciousness brings things to your feet because the minute she started talking about this concept so many things clicked for me.

In the mid-1900s, Joseph Campbell's book, The Hero With a Thousand Faces, delved into the idea of this concept.  You will find certain common elements in mythic adventures that sum up the Hero’s Journey. A perfect example of this is so obvious in the movie The Matrix.

Below is a diagram of the steps of the journey that a person takes to self-actualization and living the life that is destined for them:

So why does this even matter? Well you can view your life as a story and you are the hero or heroine. When I started looking into this concept I could see where it applied to my life. I realized I am in the beginning stages of the Extraordinary World. I have heard the call to action and at first I refused it. Then I met a mentor and I crossed a threshold. I am vacillating between meeting new allies and sadly also enemies. I have had a few trials and moments of oops, but I am learning new skills and I am growing. I feel the first success close at hand.

But it’s not only apparent in facing and discovering your life’s purpose. The Hero’s Journey occurs every single time you face any particular challenge. You can be a hero every day of your life!

Now this should be exciting for many of you because if you pay close attention you will see your own journey unfolding in your life. Again you are telling your story so how do you want it to play out? How do you want it end?

If you know me, I am excited about learning this because I am determined to live the life I have always dreamed of. After losing so much time, and being given a second chance to pick things up where I left off in my early twenties, I am running straight to my glory. The Hero’s Journey gives me the inspiration to grab hold of the wonderful ride called Life and create and manifest the things I have always wanted to do.

And it’s already happening! How do I know? Because you are reading this and later this week you will be watching a YouTube video I will have produced! My dreams, my journey is already coming true. I am already my own heroine and I want you to be the super stars of your stories too!
